Fred's journey down the Kiwanis Road started in Denison, Iowa, where he was able to see firsthand the type of impact a Kiwanis Club can have on a local community. He found the club to be friendly and open. The club had good programs that kept members informed of what was happening in the city, county, and state.
A couple of club members asked if Fred would go with them to the International Convention, which was in St. Louis that year. Fred learned what Kiwanis International was all about, and wanted to get further involved.
While in Denison, the Kiwanis Club helped build an Aktion Club. Working alongside those dedicated Kiwanians was just awe inspiring.
Later, Fred and Nancy moved back to Arizona where Fred became a member of the Kiwanis Club of Sun Lakes, and their final move brought them back to Wisconsin and closer to their son.
That move allowed Fred the time to really plunge into Kiwanis. He served two terms as Lt. Governor and was talked into running for Governor-elect. He was nominated from the floor and became Governor in 2011.
Those times and those leadership experiences were truly wonderful. They gave Fred the opportunity to see Kiwanis at its best, especially with Key Club and Circle K, and of course Aktion Clubs and the rest of the Service Leadership Program Clubs. Fred is enthralled with the Kiwanis organization.
